Caleb Ross and Noah Donelly
Caleb Ross and Noah Donelly met as neighbors in Baltimore in March 2038 and developed a chosen father-son relationship as Noah’s relationship with Caleb’s mother, Jess Ross, deepened. Noah later became Caleb’s stepfather when he married Jess.
Overview
Noah entered Caleb’s life as a neighbor, not as his physician. Although Noah worked as a pediatric neurologist, the personal relationship created a conflict of interest, and another neurologist always managed Caleb’s care. Noah built trust through consistent family contact, accessible communication, and practical caregiving.
Origins and Early Relationship
Caleb and Jess initially lived in the accessible suite attached to the Lee family home. Noah moved into a four-bedroom rowhouse across the street during the same period. Their proximity allowed Caleb to become familiar with Noah through ordinary visits and time within the neighborhood.
Noah addressed Caleb directly and learned to distinguish among his AAC use, speech approximations, vocalizations, gestures, facial expressions, and changes in muscle tension. He deferred to Jess when interpreting unfamiliar cues and did not treat his medical training as a substitute for her knowledge of Caleb.
Dynamics and Communication
Caleb was a nonspeaking AAC user who communicated through several methods. Noah adapted his communication to Caleb rather than requiring a verbal response. He waited for Caleb’s reactions, used direct address, and used drawings when he needed to discuss the proposal to Jess.
Caleb used “Daaa” as a speech approximation for father. He had used it for his late biological father, Danny Ross, and later used it for Noah. The family treated the shared word as recognition of both relationships rather than replacement of one father by the other.
Health, Access, and Caregiving
Caleb lived with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and hypotonic cerebral palsy. He required extensive support with seizure management, mobility, transfers, personal care, communication, and sleep equipment. Noah’s medical knowledge reduced the amount of explanation required during emergencies, but Jess remained Caleb’s primary caregiver and the principal authority on his routines and presentation.
Noah never served on Caleb’s treatment team. Their family relationship remained separate from Caleb’s medical care, which another neurologist managed.
Shared History and Milestones
Several months after Jess and Noah began dating, Jess and Caleb moved into Noah’s rowhouse. Noah gave Caleb a permanent bedroom and included him in choices about the space. The exact move date was not documented, but the three lived together before August 2039.

Before proposing to Jess, Noah used drawings to ask Caleb whether he could marry her and become part of their family. Caleb responded with “Daaa.” He later spent the proposal evening asleep at the Lee family home and remained there through Noah and Jess’s initial engagement calls.
Jess later shared photographs of Danny with Caleb, who also called him “Daaa.” Caleb’s use of the word for both men remained part of the family’s account of his relationship with his biological father and his chosen father.
